WELCOME TO SALEM UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST
Thank you for visiting our website. Here a little bit about what is on Salem's heart and mind as we hope Winter is about to give way to Spring.

OPEN AND AFFIRMING
Our congregation voted in late January to be listed as an Open and Affirming congregation, meaning that we wish it to be explicitly known we welcome people of all ages, races, cultures, sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, family configurations, economic circumstances, faith backgrounds, and physical and mental abilities.

THE SEASON OF LENT
The Season of Lent is a special period of time on the calendar of Christian churches. Lent is the period of 40 days (not counting Sundays) prior to Easter. The Christian Church historically has used the Season of Lent to encourage people to reflect upon their lives in light of the Cross of Jesus Christ. Salem is marking the Season of Lent in a variety of ways including,
  • MIDWEEK WORSHIP SERVICES to be held on Wednesday nights at 7 PM, beginning on March 1. These services will follow the theme "The Gospel in the Broken," and the pastor's sermon each night will focus on a Bible verse that makes reference to something broken. The subject each time will be how the broken points toward the gift of the presence of God in our lives.
  • SUNDAY MORNING WORSHIP SERVICES will strike a Lenten theme, too, though Sundays are not officially part of Lent. The Sunday morning theme for the Season of Lent is "Encountering the Cross of Jesus Today." The pastor's sermons under this theme all present biographies of New Testament characters who in some way encountered the Cross. He will draw parallels to show how the Cross intersects our lives and what that can mean for our living.
YOUTH SUNDAY: March 12
The Middle and High School Youth of our church will plan and lead the worship service on Sunday, March 12. Our youth are always actively involved in our worship services in a variety of ways, but Youth Sunday gives them an opportunity to plan and lead the service from beginning to end.

MARCH MADNESS FOOD DRIVE
Salem's Mission Committee uses a "March Madness" basketball tournament theme to sponsor a food drive benefiting Verona's Badger Prairie Needs Network. Week by week the food donated gathers and it is fun to watch the contributions grow as we move from "selection Sunday" to "the sweet 16" to the "elite eight" and, eventually, to the "final four." The drive is targeted to match the particular needs of the food pantry at the present time.
