Baby Shower at Salem

On April 3rd, there was a baby shower held at Salem Church for Ellie Bergenske.  An open invitation was given to members of the congregation to join in the celebration and wish Ellie well.  At the time of this posting, we have been blessed by the new arrival!

Baby showers are held for the first child of Salem members.  Some of the other special things that Salem offers are mentioned here.

Palm Sunday Donkey Walk, Music Sunday

The temperature was chilly, but the skies were bright and beautiful on Palm Sunday.  In remembrance of Jesus' journey into Jerusalem, many Salem members gathered for the annual Donkey Walk from the UW Clinic in Verona to Salem Church.  After Pastor Mark opened with a prayer, the donkey and crowd proceeded to the church.  It was also Music Sunday, and the service was filled with songs from Salem's various choirs.  The picture below features the Chancel Choir, Children's Choir, and Bell Choir combined for one of the songs.

Laura Yurs's Ecclesiastical Council

On March 13, Laura Yurs held an Ecclesiastical Council at Salem Church.  An Ecclesiastical Council is an important step toward ordination in the United Church of Christ.  Representatives from all over the Southwest Wisconsin Association of the United Church of Christ heard a portion of Laura’s ordination paper and then questioned her on matters of theology and ministry.  It was easily evident to those in attendance how hard Laura has been working at her studies.  Her amazing gift of preaching shown through in her answers.  After a period of questioning, a vote was taken to authorize Laura’s ordination, pending a call to a congregation.  In the United Church of Christ, a person is not ordained until a church calls him or her to be its pastor.  Laura will be graduating from Union Theological Seminary in 2011.

Youth Sunday

The service on March 13 was led by Salem's Youth.  Each year the youth at Salem put together something amazing, and this year it was filled with vibrant colors and wonderful music provided by a very talented ensemble of the youth in our congregation.

In the weeks leading up to the service, Laura Kolden did a tremendous job working with the youth and guiding them along the way.  The photos also include some behind the scenes preparation for the service.
