Crop Walk 2010

Salem had a great turnout for the Verona CROP Walk on October 17th.  Thank you to
those who walked and to all that participated through their generous donations, totalling
approximately $2000.  Collected funds were beneficial to our local Verona Food Pantry
as well as world wide through programs of Church World Service.

Youth Hayride

The Salem youth enjoyed their annual hayride on Sunday.  A big thank you goes out to Craig Rhiner for giving the youth a ride in the beautiful countryside.  After the hayride, there was a bonfire complete with hotdogs and smores.

Crop Walk

If you've been thinking about giving the CROP Walk a try, there is still time to sign up to walk with Salem UCC! This year, the Walk starts at Sugar River United Methodist Church, winds through downtown Verona, and finishes back at Sugar River. The date is Sunday, October 17, 2010 - the time is about 12:30 to 3:00, with the Walk kicking off at 1:00.

The Verona CROP Walk is one of some 1600 CROP Walks that take place around the USA every fall. We walk to raise funds for the hunger relief and prevention programs of Church World Service.  We walk to support the Verona Food Pantry (they will receive 25% of all donations collected for the Verona walk). We walk to make a public statement that hunger is still a tragic reality in our world. And we walk in solidarity with the poor, who must walk for food, water, education, or employment - in fact, for their very survival.

If you would like to walk with the Salem team, here's what to do:

1. Sign up: Contact me (Cathy) at cathykwilinski@hotmail.com. Or, sign up on the sheet in the back of the church. Or, sign up online - instructions on how to do that are given below.

2. After you sign up, I will get a collection envelope to you.

3. Collect donations from friends/family members/neighbors/coworkers who agree to sponsor your Walk. If they wish to donate by cash or check (payable to "CROP"), they should give you their donation directly, and you can keep it in the collection envelope until the day of the Walk. If they wish to donate securely online via credit card, they can do so by visiting your personal CROP Walk page - instructions below.

4. Bring the completed envelope with you on the day of the Walk. Friendly volunteers will register you for the Walk, receive your envelope, and send you on your way!

Signing up for the CROP Walk online can have some advantages for you.  It makes asking for sponsors for your walk easy and nearly 100% painless! When you join the team online, you will automatically get your own "personal page" attached to the Salem page.  From your personal page, you can send email messages to your friends and family members asking them to donate on your behalf.  These emails will have the CROP logo and links to your personal page, so sponsors can jump straight to your site where they can donate securely by credit card. Your page automatically keeps track of donations on your behalf and shows you your progress toward your own fundraising goal.

Here is how to sign up online:

1. Click the link at the bottom of this email that reads "Click here to view the team page for Salem United Church of Christ".

2. That should take you to the Salem team page.  The header should say "Verona CROP Hunger Walk 2010: Salem United Church of Christ". There is a beautiful picture of Frank Westphal holding Blaise, who is holding a CROP Walk sign.

3. Click the link in the center of the page that says "Join Team".

4. Follow the screens and fill in all the required information.  If you have any trouble, let me know and I can try to help.

Just in case the link at the bottom of this email doesn't work for you, you can always access the Salem team page the long way:

1. Go to http://www.cropwalk.org/

2. Select Wisconsin

3. Select the Verona CROP Walk

4. Click "Find a Team"

5. Search for "Salem"

I highly recommend signing up online. Once you are signed up, it's simple to ask people to support your walk.  They can consider what they want to give without feeling "on the spot", and it's easier for them if they prefer to donate by credit card.

Whether you sign up online or not, I hope you will consider being a part of the Salem CROP Walk Team.  We are so richly blessed to have a very warm, welcoming, active, and committed congregation.  Your participation in the CROP Walk shows our community what our Christian faith is all about.

God bless you!
